Capitals Minute for Thursday, January 17

Posted on January 17, 2013

Capitals Radio NetworkGoaltender Braden Holtby is poised to start between the pipes Saturday night in Tampa Bay, as the Capitals kick off a 48-game season against the Lightning. With a compact schedule, having two young but experienced netminders could ultimately prove to be a big advantage. Yet, after seven playoff victories and a series triumph over Boston, Holtby is likely to get first crack at holding down the number one spot.

Today's Capitals Minute talks to Holtby about getting ready for Saturday, and what this shortened training camp has been like this week. Washington will practice this morning at Kettler before heading downtown for an evening skate. Fans are invited to watch tonight’s skate at Verizon Center, with doors opening at 6:00 p.m.

Scouting Report: Tampa Bay this Saturday

January 16, 2013

Some line combination news, and radio guy thoughts to get you ready for Saturday night, as the Capitals head to Tampa Bay. We’re on the air at 6:00 p.m. Saturday (106.7 The Fan and 1500 AM) one hour prior to puck drop. It sounds like second year pro Cory Conacher could very well be in Tampa’s top six forwards when Washington arrives. He’s skating this week with Vinny Lecavalier and Teddy Purcell, which is some pretty good real estate to be a part of. Read Erik Erlendsson’s story in the Tampa Tribune for more on the kid who’s looking to make a name for himself. (@ErlendssonTBO on Twitter). Erik also reported earlier this week fairly consistent defensive pairings for Guy Boucher’s bunch. Eric Brewer and newly acquired Matt Carle are skating together, as well as Victor Hedman and newcomer Sami Salo. Brian Lee has been paired this week with Marc-Andre Bergeron, and Keith Aulie is together with Brendan Mikkelson. Would imagine the Brewer/Carle pairing could in theory be matched against a potential Johansson/Backstrom/Ovechkin trio. Good chance if healthy this season that Brewer and Carle will carry a lot of mail on the blue line.
