With offensive chances few and far between in the first period, Alex Ovechkin scored his sixth goal of the season at 5:20 of the second frame from Mike Ribeiro and Jason Chimera. The goal made the score 1-0 Washington at the time. Braden Holtby stopped a Steve Bernier penalty shot in the second, to keep the Caps in the lead, but a late goal from Ilya Kovalchuk tied the game at 1-1 heading to the third.
